Excel Basics Training – Part 1

Join us for part 1 of our Excel Basics training taught by Microsoft Certified Master Instructor, Rob Mendell. Don’t miss this opportunity to polish your Excel skills. This training will cover topics from launch, basic navigation, and theory definitions to formula fundamentals, basic cell formatting, and data entry. Real life examples and projects from our industry will be incorporated in this training.

  • Launch, etc.
    • Launch, open, save, save as, close, exit
  • Definitions
    • Cell, Column, Row, Worksheet, Workbook
  • Basic navigation
    • Zoom
    • First cell, Last cell, Name box, etc.
  • Theory & Definitions:
    What can go in an Excel cell / An approach to setting up workbooks

    • Data
    • Label
    • Formula
  • Enter and Edit
    • Enter information into a cell
    • Edit a cell
  • Formula Fundamentals
    • Basic math with + – * / operators
    • The SUM function and AutoSum
    • F2 opens the formula to edit it in the cell
    • The AVERAGE function
    • The Fill Handle (copy by dragging the black plus-sign cursor)
  • Basic cell formatting
    • Font, Number, Alignment, Border, Fill
  • Data entry
    • Wrap Text
    • ALT+ENTER
    • CTRL+’
    • ‘ (apostrophe) to maintain formatting
  • Combining all the above to create a simple spreadsheet
    • Format Cell, Column, Row, Worksheet (name and tab color)
    • Center Across Selection (better than Merge & Center)
  • More with Formulas
    • Relative and absolute references – dollar signs in formula cell references (F4 as a toggle)
    • Precedence (a/k/a Order of Operations) – parentheses in formulas
